Integratív jellegű, többek közt meditatív elemeket is tartalmazó, de lényegét tekintve kognitív viselkedés terápiás módszer. Specifikusan illeszkedik viszont a borderline és más impulzuskontroll zavaros betegek sajátosságaihoz, ezért több vonatkozásban különbözik is a hagyományos kognitív viselkedésterápiás megközelítésektől. A készségfejlesztő tréning alapgyakorlata a belső élmények tudatosítására irányul, a többi gyakorlat az érzelemszabályozás és a stresszkezelés fejlesztését valamint az interperszonális kapcsolatok tudatosabb és hatékonyabb irányítását célozzák meg, konkrét lelki és viselkedési technikák megtanításával és begyakoroltatásával.
